Springfield Athletic Grounds

Proposed Association football club

Well Known Players Engaged

We learn that several prominent local gentlemen interested in the association game have approached the Springfield Athletic Grounds Co., Wigan, with a view to establishing a strong Association team for the town. The result of the negotiations is that the Athletic Company have leased the football area of the ground, with the use of the pavilion and other conveniences to a club to be styled "The Wigan County Association Football Club," which has already been affiliated with the Lancashire Football Association.

We are further informed that the following well-known footballers have been signed :- R.W. Menham, the late goalkeeper for Everton, and who played in the English Cup at the Crystal Palace ; Hugh Mackay, late goalkeeper for Oldham County ; George Molyneux, late full back of Everton combination ; George Holmes, full back, late of Wellingboro' ; John Stevenson, late of Oldham County ; William Sharpe, late of Oldham County ; Jack Gordon, late of Preston North End ; John Henry Salisbury, (Welsh International reserve), late of Rock Ferry ; and John F. Morris, also of Rock Ferry. The only Wigan man who has signed so far is Harry Brown, of the Wigan Nondescripts.

An application for admittance to the Lancashire League has been made, and there is every prospect of the club being admitted. The company intend to form another team entirely of local men, with the idea of applying for admittance to the Lancashire Alliance.

The Lancashire League

Wigan County Elected

The annual meeting of the Lancashire League was held on Saturday at the Rose and Crown Hotel, Chorley. Mr Smith, of Southport, president, occupied the chair, there being a representative attendance. The statement of accounts showed a balance in hand of £97 14s. 7d. The receipts included £53 11s. in subscriptions, and Blackpool and Liverpool South End had forfeited £20 each. The profits on Chorley v. Rest of League amounted to £22 10s.

In the report the committee regretted that the league was disturbed through the resignation of Liverpool South End, and they emphasised the necessity of stringent inquiry into the standing of all applicants for membership. The accounts as presented were adopted. Thanks were returned to the various officials of the league for their services during the past season.

The following clubs applied for admission to the league: Fleetwood Rangers, Rossendale and South Shore (retiring clubs), Ashton-in-Makerfield, Haydock, Hindley, Horwich, Middleton, New Brighton, , Padiham, Rochdale, Rock Ferry, Skerton and Wigan County. On election the following were taken: Rochdale, Wigan County, South Shore, Middleton and Horwich.

Mr. Smith, Southport was re-elected chairman and treasurer, and Mr. J. H. Lightbown, Bury, was re-elected secretary. It was decided that the annual conference for the arrangement of league matches be held at Blackburn on June 19th. The result of the Wigan County's election will give the utmost satisfaction in Wigan, for no trouble is to be spared to get together a capital team.

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

WIGAN COUNTY

The players engaged by the Wigan County Club gave an exhibition game at the Springfield Grounds on Wednesday evening. Admission was free, and the opportunity of witnessing the match was taken advantage of by about four thousand persons. Fine weather favoured the event, and shortly after six o'clock the following men turned out :- "Colours" : R.W. Menham (goal) ; G.R. Holmes and G. Molyneux (backs) ; Stevenson, Greer and Sharpe (half-backs) ; J.Gordon, P. Gordon Morris, Salisbury, and Sharples (forwards). "Greys" : McKay (goal) ; H. Brown and Lyddon (backs) ; Keegin, Dingley and Smith (half-backs) ; Snodgrass, Murray, Armstrong, Atherton, Ellison, Whitehouse (forwards).

The game was keenly contested, and the "Colours" had much the best of matters for some time, but at last the "Greys" forwards broke away, and after a spirited display of passing tactics, a hot shot was sent which Menham found himself  unable to keep out. Subsequently play was seen principally well within the "Greys" quarters, and McKay was several times called up to clear. This he did in excellent style, and at the interval the "Greys" were leading by one goal to nil. In the second half the "Colours" utilised the first opportunity of scoring, and matters being equalised, the position of affairs remained unchanged, each side being credited with a goal.

A further test match will take place on Saturday afternoon, and the club will commence its work in earnest on Wednesday next, when Burton Swifts visit Wigan.

WIGAN COUNTY AND THE ENGLISH CUP COMPETITION.

At a meeting of the Northern Division Committee of the English Football Association, held at Blackburn on Monday night, Dr Morley presiding, Fleetwood Rangers and Wigan County were drawn together for the qualifying round of the English Cup Competition for Division 2. Fleetwood have the choice of grounds, and the Wigan County have approached them with a view to the important fixture being played at Wigan this Saturday. The Fleetwood committee had not decided the matter when we went to press, but there is every probability that the game will take place on the Springfield ground

WIGAN COUNTY ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CLUB

To the editor

Sir – for the information of your readers, I am requested by my committee to give an explanation of the reason why the charges varied for admittance  to the football matches played on the Springfield Park grounds on the 11th and 18th inst., and also why members of the club and ticket holders were charged admission an the 18th inst.

The match with Southport Central on the 18th inst. was a Lancashire League fixture, which league in their rules provide that no less charge than fourpence shall be made for ordinary admission to league matches.

The match with Rochdale on the 18th inst. being the first qualifying round of the Lancashire Cup competition, was governed entirely by the rules of the Lancashire Football Association, which stipulate that all members and ticket holders shall pay the admission charges to the ground and stands (this being on account of the gate receipts having to be equally divided between the competing clubs.)

So much for the action of the committee to date.

For the future I am pleased to say that arrangements have been made whereby members of the club (annual subs 7s 6d.) and ticket holders (full members) will be admitted free to cup ties as well as ordinary matches on the Wigan Grounds.

Trusting this explanation will be satisfactory, and that arrangements made will be approved of and appreciated by all concerned,  - I am sir, yours faithfully,

J. Alf. Quarmby, Secretary
