Barton played forward for most of the first half and resumed in goal after the break. Blake retired injured shortly after scoring the first goal. Haydock centre forward Roberts also left the field shortly after scoring, but returned for the second half.

Some reports state that County were unable to raise a team, others say that County would only travel to Middleton if sent funds to cover rail fares as County had obliged them he same way earlier in the season. Middleton had not paid their players for two months and declined.
